Pía’s Comments
2-rupee note (2019):
‘[It is a treasure] because it is not a “normal” note and I bought it in a market.
‘It is rather funny, to buy money from another country like that. I remember I bought it in a market in Madrid’s Plaza Mayor, which takes place every Sunday. I also remember there were notes from other countries.
‘I think if a girl in India saw a 5 Euro note they might not think it was as cool as the Indian note, because it doesn’t have a tiger or anything like that, but I don’t think she’d find it boring, because it would still be different from the currency they use there.
I think the most striking thing about it is the tiger and the watermark; it’s what I like the best. If I went to India I wouldn’t use this to pay, because it is very special to me and I don’t want to use it. ”
Pía’s mother’s comments:
At the time, we had started a small collection of bank notes and stamps for Pía.
Polymer clay girl:
“My mother made this before I was born. It looks like me when I was younger. [As to whether I have changed a lot since I was little], I do think I have changed quite a lot, and I think I am quite different, though maybe not that much. Aside from what I look like, my personality has also changed quite a bit. And I think my mother has changed since I was born, because she has adapted to the stages I have gone through.”
Pia’s mother’s comments:
I made this girl in 2002. I had discovered Fimo polymer clay and was into making little dolls. Pía sees herself in it — I couldn’t have imagined that I would be a mother when I made it.”
Lucky coin (50 yen):
“I consider it one of my treasures because my grandmother gave it to me, and it has always brought me good luck.
I have sometimes taken it to school when I have had tests, and it’s worked quite well. But also, for instance, when I wanted my football team to win, I sometimes used the coin and it would win. But I don’t usually use it, because I also have a marble I got given at an after-school activity, and that brings better luck.”
Snoopy Mini Phone Book (2022):
“This was a gift from the Reyes Magos (Three Kings). I love Snoopy. I would rather leave it unused, not just because it will last longer, but also because I think it would be a pity to use it. Also it asks for certain details that I don’t have yet. Aside from Snoopy, I also love Woodstock and all the Peanuts characters, because they are the main characters and they are very cute. I like other similar characters, like Mafalda, Guille and Garfield. Oh, and Calvin and Hobbes, of course.”
Blue scarab:
“My grandmother brought it back for me from Egypt. I don’t like real beetles all that much. But because this was from Egypt, and it had a little Egyptian inscription underneath, with little drawings, I really liked it. She’s given me some other scarabs that I have also liked. ”
Pia’s mother’s comments:
The scarab and the 50 yen coin are from Pia’s paternal grandmother, who is called Carmen Teresa. She has travelled a lot because of Pia’s grandfather’s job, and she has little treasures from all over the world. Every time we visit them in Burgos, Pía comes back with a wonderful little treasure to add to her box.
Eiffel Tower keyring (2023):
“I really liked it when I visited the real tower, and I had seen [these little towers] in a shop but didn’t buy one. When I got back to Madrid, Daddy put it on the table for me as a surprise.
When we went to the Eiffel Tower, my favourite bit was going up in the lift — I loved looking out as we went up, because it was see-through, but it made my parents really dizzy.
In Paris I loved going to Disneyland although I prefer Madrid, because in Madrid you don’t have to walk so much.
We also saw some other monuments and sites, and we almost went to that pyramid museum thing, but in the end, we were too tired.
We stayed in a hotel. And I remember that there was a really cool shower in the Paris room, which was, I think, the only place where I have loved taking a shower. And I have to say the place where I slept was very comfortable. ”
Pia’s mother’s comments:
We bought it from one of the many street-sellers. We gave it to Pía because she was so excited to visit Paris. The sparkly stickers are her own addition.
Notes about Pía’s Treasure
Pía was born in Madrid, Spain in 2015.
At the time of sending me her treasure (November 2024), Pía was 9.
I asked her some follow-up questions in August 2025.
Pía and her mother Juliana sent me their treasures at the same time, and they also sent me pictures of the boxes where they keep their treasures. This is Pia’s:
Currencies:
At the time of writing this (January 2026):
2 rupees is equivalent to a little under 2 Euro cents. The 2-rupee banknote was in circulation from 1943 to 1995, so if she went to India now, Pía would not be able to use it anyway, as it is no longer valid.
50 yen is equivalent to around 27 Euro cents.
